Hi, I didnt want a real tree for the potential of this very thing happening but the wife got her way and now the water from the tree has leaked and swelled my floor. I just noticed it tonight when we were taking out presents. I had put a plastic garbage bag down just in case of this but somehow it got wet and now my floor is swelled up maybe an 1/8th of an inch on 2-3 boards, there doesnt seem to be any discoloration but I dont know how long the problem was there, the area around there is slightly swelled up from the rest of the floor maybe a 2 foot radius, what should I do, should I put a heater over there, will the wood settle back down, what should I do. These are new floors from a remodel.

Thanks,
Robert

A heater and a fan would be a good idea. It may swell some more and get a little worse . But once it dries out and contracts , and it may take a while, there will be a noticable difference for the good.

I would suggest you do nothing but wipe up the water.
Slow drying is better than fast/forced drying. The wood will slowly return to normal size.
Relative humidity is low during the heating season so the wood would dry without lots of help.
If the wood is a solid, it may return to 90% of original .
If the wood is engineered (plywood type), and the wood swelled particularly at the edges;;; you may have permanent damage requiring board replacements.

I was thinking of speeding up the drying process a little bit to suck up some of that topical moisture and stop the bleeding. But I see Ray's point about a slower dry being better. If you soak a piece of wood and inject it with heat and air its going to tweek out more than if you let it dry natural. My bad

The finish will most likely lift in that area, like a glass ring on a table does.

I didn't want a real one either and mine leaked through some plastic somehow. Now I have three planks that need pulling. Glue down engineered over sheet vinyl over concrete. And I ain't going to fix it either till she stops getting real trees.!

Seen it happen plenty of times with plants, xmas trees etc. Best thing is to try to dry it slowly. Will never go back to the same gap and look. The best thing if you have extra wood left from your batch is replacing it. As an installer it's easy enough to do but should be done by a professional. Replacing those boards with be better anyways to avoid mold.
