Hey guys, first time post. I'm installing some 3 1/4 x 3/4" solid hickory in my house for the first time. I started laying it down in the upstairs, finished the landings, etc, etc. It's been a breeze so far.

The problem is, I have a fireplace that I want to wood frame around and I also have a kitchen with a 45 degree edge that I want to frame with hardwood. I get that I need to use a slip tongue and router with the miters to hold it all together when framing the areas.

However, these two areas are on the opposite sides of each other. Now I know there will be some variation (1 degree or so). How do I compensate?

Making some precise cuts on the chop saw + router bit? I think i would be okay doing this if I only had a fireplace to deal with or only the kitchen. What if I have to make special 1 degree off cuts at both opposing ends between the fireplace and the kitchen? Sliding in the hardwood at the end of the run seems like it could be problematic.

How would you guys tackle this? Image attached showing the layout:

Thanks!

I usually go from both sides and cut a piece in the middle to fit stiss keeping in mind the stagger. I cut off the groove end and router a new one. if it is a prefinished floor withe a bevel you will have to redo that also with either a good file or with your chop saw set at a bevel then dad a little finish on the raw wood.

I see, installed the ends first!

It is prefinished. Are you saying I need to bevel the newly cut and routed ends that meet up in a perpendicular fashion? I also have a stair tread down the hallway (not in the diagram) and I may have to one degree or so cuts that butt up perpendicularly to the stair tread.

I had the exact same layout. I installed the boards framing the tile first. These boards had a tongue facing into the room toward the fireplace. I undercut the fireplace brick and slid the boards into the undercut....just personal preference vs bordering the fireplace. Where the tile frame boards met at an angle I cut the corresponding angle on the mating field board with a jig saw. I re-grooved any boards that needed it with a slot cutting bit on the router table. As the other responder said fitting a board between 2 installed boards is not too difficult..precise cutting required but quite do-able. I place a board that lines up with the edge of one of the installed boards and abutt the end of the board that will be cut to fit against it. I find it easier to re-groove a board than re-tongue it. Lay a straight edge across the end of the opposite end of the board to be cut to fit and the edge of the installed board.....this will give you the line to cut.
