This is my first post to this site. I'll be installing about 1800 sf of reclaimed pine flooring in my home and, since this is new to me, I have appreciated reading through the posts here. I'm sure I'll be spending time here in the coming weeks and asking many questions. Here's my first:

My crawl space (in the mid-Atlantic region) had moisture problems last year due to sweating from plumbing and AC ducts (recently added in a major rennovation). We've insulated pipes and--after consulting with several specialists--are planning on sealing off the crawl space and installing dehumidifiers, as well as making sure usual vapor barrier is in place.

Of course, everything I'm reading now about wood floor installation begins with "make sure the crawl space is well-ventilated..." etc. Mine won't be ventilated at all, but should be dry.

Assuming the dehumidifiers do the job (and we're buying top-notch speciality devices), is there any reason to be concerned about my floors?

Thanks in advance.

I'm a full supporter of what you have chosen to do, over a ventalated crawl space.

A vented crawl space can still reach humidity levels of 100%, with just the moisture available in the air, vented into the cooler crawl space.

A climatized crawl space is far superior to a vented crawl space.

I agree. If you are able to keep the crawl space completely dry, then there is no reason for venting it. Venting a crawl space is needed when soil conditions and drainage allow the space to get damp. If you can control the earth from getting damp and moisture from entering this space, you are better off sealing it up. This can easily be monitored with an inexpensive hygrometer that measures relative humidity. However, that being said, I wouldn't think you would want it extremely dry like living in a desert.

I agree with a closed crawlspace as well. For a true vapor barrier ground cover see http://www.stegoindustries.com/
