Our floor installer used Woodwise Full-trowell filler in walnut color on our solid hardwood walnut floors. Well, it doesn't match at all. It looks terrible. Everywhere there is a knot or crack, it stands out horribly. Did he do something wrong? He says he can't think of anything he could have done differently. This is only a third of the floors, as we are doing the finish in 3 phases because we are living in the house after water damage. So, I'm hesitant to have him finish the other two thirds. Please advise!!

I have heard of S&F guys using sawdust and liquid sanding sealer. Mixing a filling compound from the sawdust of the wood itself.

He can use a peoduct by Glitsa called "wood flour"..it is an epoxy base and you mix sanding dust from the actual floor itself..this will be your best match...and will hold up over time..filler will not

You can post pics but I sense that you are filling a character grade floor ? You mentioned knots. IF you want perfect colored filler, there isn't one.Ever filler will partly match some areas of your floor and stick out in other areas.

The "only" way to deal with this is to fill and then color the filler. This means tinting a glaze or a shellac and moving your filler into the correct shade of the exact color you need. It's a pain in the butt and tedious.

If your flooring contractor can't do this (and many cannot) you will need a faux painter. The only reason I know how to do this is because I actually learned the skill from a faux painter.

If you want perfectly colored filler, I believe that you need to invest in a faux painter that can do it for you and let the flooring contractor can finish coating the floors after the painter is done .

yea, full trowell filler is not for knots, its for chipped edges, unsquare end joints and the like. You can stain the woodwise to make it darker that will help, just dont get the stain on the face of the floor unless you want to stain the whole thing. A rag, artist brush a steady hand and patience is all you need.
