Maybe too elementry of a question, but here goes. Now that I have my underlayment done, I've changed my mind from doing a pre-finished floor myself to contracting a finish in place hardwood floor. The person who I will contract appears knowledgeable & trustworthy. I definitely want an oak floor, but color finish is yet to be determined. I have a choice of white or red oak, my guy recommending white, but really has no preference and is not pushing either. So, I would like to ask the pros & cons of white versus read oak, relative to installation, staining, & finishing. Comments, please.
Thanks, FJK

Under a natural finish, white will have a brown hue, red will be rosy. White has tighter grain pattern, less wild spring growth. White is a little harder. Both take stains well, some say white takes stain a little better.
I prefer white too, I think it is more elegant, less grainy, and less common. I'd bet if we did a poll, most floor guys would choose white. Your decision should include the decor of your home-cabinet colors, ceilings, stair rails, etc.
