Hi,

Doing a remodel with 5/16 solid white oak prefinished 2 1/4 wide planks. Was looking at the edges and I am worried about splitting if I nail it or staple. What is the general consensus for thinner hardwood, I am concerned with the thin tongue & groove edges, what stapler nailer should I use?

And one more Q: How long will it take to do 500sqf with 10 stairs?

Thanks, site is awesome, already learned a ton and I've installed floors before

Those floors are typically stapled with a Bostitch Floor Runner and 1" staples. You can glue it but more money and hassle. And the time it takes depends on many factors; Skill level, experience, layout, etc. It won't be done in a weekend, at least not well.

36" wide steps with 2 1/4" material would take me 50 minutes per step and riser if the saws are away from the work place and not right next to me. Add about an hour for the whole job if the substrate has to be prepped(cut off nosing) Of course the straightness of the wall or stringers can cut or add some time. I scribe every piece and don't settle for gaps that can be seen from a standing eye position.
