I've had two contractors come out and bid a hardwood floor job. The job is weaving in to this existing floor. One contractor stated it was select white oak and the other contractor stated No1 white oak. The color is off in the pictures, I believe they're right about the white oak, but I'm confused about the grade. Pictures are below (sorry cell phone camera).

Any help is appreciated!

100% select, there is not one knot in that floor and very little color.

From the pics I would have guessed Select and Better Red Oak.

Most home applications are going to be select and better, and I'd agree that this one is. I usually have to come in and sand a portion of the floor to tell red from white.

We have lots of 100-year and older floors in my area, and new white is the best match for both old white and old red. At some point in the aging process, both the white and the red sand up a 'tan' color, and new white is closer to that look. The salmon-colored new red looks out of place next to the tan, and no amount of stain really hides that difference. The new white has some tan, gray, and blonde, and that blends in fine. It still needs a light stain to really make the match-up work.

My business partner lives in a county where more of the floors are from the 50s and up--lots of after-the-war suburbs over there. It's almost all red oak, and the new salmon-colored red matches perfectly--we finish them natural, and there's no difference at all.
