I am thinking of refinishing the floor in my house. I have decided to go with water-based PolyU finish, but can't decide between DuraSeal and Minwax. Any advice on which one I should use?

A local flooring store I went to suggested that I also use StreetShoe Finish in addition to two coats of DuraSeal/Minwax finish. Does that make sense?

Also, what is the advantage of using a Sealer? Thanks for your help...

dont use either. Go to a hardwood floor specialty store ... a brand that works for me is called garco.. also using laquer sealer is good cause its a quick drying coat so u can do 2 coats in one day...

minwax makes a stain and poly I would use their stain for color then put the streetshoe on for the poly coats. Basic also makes a single componet finish thats called emulsion thats a little easier to use than street shoe. Also I woulndnt use laquer sealer unless you wanted the color. It has a flash point of like 85 deg. verry easy to have a flash off fire if given a open flame. waterbornes dry in 1 or 2 hours anyway if you are in a hurry.

Hey beautiful floors,

Welcome. A quick heads up about our forum. It's mostly pros giving SOUND, PROFESSIONAL, and SAFE advice to weekend warriors, DIYers and novices. We avoid recommending potentially dangerous practices and products. If you have been in this trade for any length of time, the you may have heard about the tragedies of using lacquer sanding sealers in the Boston area.

http://www.elcosh.org/en/document/853/d ... setts.html

Please take this to heart when making recommendations. ONLY recommend safe and industry accepted practices and procedures. As a 30 yr. veteran of floor finishing, I am aware of using fast drying solvent based sealers to speed up the work. Today, there are much safer, though more costly, sealers that are much safer and nearly as fast drying. Basic's Emulsion and Catalytic Sealer, as well as Bona's water borne sealers. For a more solvent look, there is Zinsser's Universal Sealer, a de-waxed shellac ( which is still flammable but much less than lacquer ). Let' do all we can to lessen the risks of injury when floor finishing.
