Where the hardwood stair meets the wall on each step - how is this finished - the installers have used white caulking and it looks pretty bad (looks like the inside of my shower!)- is this normal?

It should be tight, with very minimal caulk. Thick, wide, ungoddly looking caulk is a sign of a miss cut, or somebody that doesn't know how to caulk a tiny 1/16" gap.
