Yes, I would agree w/ Ken, and I added that most exotic hardwoods tend to have more color variation, smoother graining and are much more light sensitive (i.e. they darken over time).
Exotic woods will often cost more, often due to import tax and shipping.
Also, exotic hardwoods tend to show scratches more.
If you are looking for brilliant red colors, exotics are often the way to go.
As Ken mentions, it's hard to generalize because there are many species, so hardness, color and graining can differ, pending on the species.
