I am going to be installing solid 3/4" hardwood flooring in the kitchen, living and dining rooms. Currently the kitchen has vinyl with underlayment underneath it. The other rooms have carpet and padding with no underlayment. It looks like the vinyl is glued down to the underlayment and the underlayment is stapled and glued to the subfloor. Is it easier to try to get the underlayment up, or should I put underlayment in the other rooms?

Pulling up what's there is just labor. Putting underlayment in the rest of the place is cost of materials and labor, pluss the chance of scaring walls trying to pull up baseboards and under cutting doorjambs.


It's your call.

It also depends on the underlayment that was used. If the underlayment is particle board, it should be removed. If it is 1/4" luan plywood, it's not great but aceptable as the 2" fasteners will go through and grab the subflooring.
