I appreciate all the good information that's available on this message board. I'm ready to start my first hardwood flooring project on a room that connects to another room with existing hardwood flooring. I want to maintain the same wood type in both rooms. The existing wood is solid 2.25" wide strips. Based on what I see online it appears to be either white or red oak. I'd appreciate any replies from some of you experts as to what type of wood you think it is and whether you think it's stained.

Looks like a natural red oak floor that the finish has ambered over time. If you are not going to refinish the exsisiting then you will need to add some stain to get that aged look.

Kevin, thanks for the input. I was leaning toward red oak as well. Talking with my wife tonight we believe that when we had it sanded last time (about 11 years ago) it was stained at that time. I do plan on sanding down the existing floor at the same time I sand the new floor. Do you think the existing floor might be a combination of red and white oak?
