Will spare the forum the long story but, against my will, we are laying carpet over good hardwood floors.....the floors are old and are oak....we purchased the house last month, pulled up the carpet and found significant stains on the hardwood in high traffic areas....these stains were from pet urine and from the carpet pad.....the low traffic areas were not stained by pet urine nor were they stained by the pad.....we had to sand the stains out....the floors are now refinished and they look great......is the FiberStep pad from HomeDepot the right pad?....should I lay felt or some other material down before installing a standard foam carpet pad?

if its an oil based finish I would give it a full 30 days before rugs go down.

Kevin,

The stain we used was oil based and the poly was water based.....we used 1 coat of stain and 4 coats of poly.....the floors have had 5+ days of drying time....do you think it would be OK to lay down a thin layer of 100% all natural cotton before laying the foam pad?...we found this cotton at Hobby Lobby.....my main concern is having to refinish the floors again in 10 years when this new carpet is pulled up....I wouldnt mind buffing them at that time but dont want to refinish again......carpet installers are scheduled for 9am and they will do whatever I tell them do.....any advice would be much appreciated.
