Methods change faster than I can keep track. The house I'm in now has a slab foundation. The wood floors are 3/4" x 2-1/4" Clear Red Oak. When the house was built (around 18 years ago) -- they did the floors by putting down 1/2" Plywood (concrete nailed to slab) over 15lb tar paper and put red rosin paper over the plywood and nailed the flooring down to the subfloor from there.

One of the rooms they didn't do the flooring and now it's time to do the flooring.

I'm reading lots and lots and lots and lots of different "new and improved" ways to do this same work... so tell me... what's the latest and greatest way?

Thank you kindly,
Pete

Probably the floating sub floor method.

Dang, that's a pretty good article if I say so myself, but guys have varying methods if you look at these discussion pages.

Won't find that article on Gorg. I guess they consider it worthless. Sad

I'd recommend a layer of felt 1st just so the concrete doesnt rub holes in the plastic membrane.

If your connecting the one room to the existing I would say fasten down the new room like the old one. I think the floating one is going to move more so if you have one method already in stick with it.

But I would take more precautions like, putting down a heavier mil plastic for vapor emission or like my fav, using BostikMVP4 and plastic. But check height first, you kinda want it even, although you could sand down the plywood at the entry to match.

Thanks for all the information.

I'm *thinking* about using BostikMVP4 but I'm on the fence. Ultimately I have two possible issues that lead to two situations.

I have a custom bi-fold door in the room that only has 1" clearance to the slab... so my idea for 1/2" (or 3/4") subfloor + 3/4" flooring will require me to re-do the bi-fold. It's an option, but if I can avoid it, I'd be happier... Any thoughts on this?

My other thought is to remove the bi-folds, trowel down MVP4, drop plywood subfloor over MVP4, drop 15lb felt over subfloor, and staple down 3/4" flooring. This, naturally will mean I have to re-fabricate the bi-folds.

Sooooo... let me have it. What say you?

Thanks,
Pete

P.S. Slab is dry, and above grade. But this is SE Florida!

Even though it would make sense to just the similar I would go with 3/4 ply and would not use the red paper, use aquabar paper which is a moisture barrier, the red paper just does not do anything.

even if the new floor is hier 1/4 or even 1/2 you can make a nice transition, it might be a little bit a tripper though.
