I'm preparing to install a solid wood floor in my living and dinning room. Besides the wood type, can someone offer advice on plank size & color. I know this is personal preference, but what I'm interested in learning is if certain plank sizes or color are more suited to a room size or popularity. For example, it appears that 3" & 4" planks are more popular these days and I've been told that a larger room is more suited to a darker color wood.

Perhaps a WEB site that gives decorating tips on wood flooring?

Thanks
KSG

Refubit,

Darker colors are popular, so as Red Oak or White Oak. I have lot of people asking to put all Hickory floors in their house. As far as 3 or 4 inch planks, if you are looking for more formal apperance you can do all 4 inch, if you need more informal apperance you can do all mixed width
( 2",3",4"). Also consider traffic. If the place gets lots of traffic you better go with harder wood species like Hickory or Brazilian Cherry.
Anyway the final choice is yours.

Vlad

Understood, Ken. Will be in touch shortly

Vlad,

How much traffic do you think a family is going to bring into there home that red or white oak could not stand up to. Brazilian cherry is hard but it is also a very flat, tight grain wood. It will show dints and scratches more than oak will. I love brazilian cheery had it in my home in Colorado I wish I had it in my home here in Wyoming, but for you to say it will hold up better, is not exattly true. It is the finish that you put on top and the maintenance upkeep thats gives a wood floor longer lasting beauty. But that is my opion.
