I'll be installing 4" rift and quartered red oak in my new home - I'm hoping that some of you can steer me in the right direction regarding expansion joints. The picture below shows the area for my install. My flooring will be layed side-to-side as (perpindicular to the trusses). I'd like to avoid having thresholds in the openings between the front foyer and the dining room/kitchen, but am concerned that the 30 feet of continuous flooring will create a problem. Do I need to place an expansion joint at these doorways? Could I instead start laying the floor from the middle of the house (using a slip tongue) and work my way out? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

IMO, no. Your using quartersawn. That makes a big difference. Acclimate properly and maintain temps and RH at normal, living conditions and that floor won't move.

Yes. And it maybe the most efficient start point.

I've laid 3/4" x 3&1/4" plain sawn over greater spans with no problems. The key is moisture control, temp control and humidity control.
