I am going to have my installer glue down to a slab an engineered hardwood unfinished 5 inch width. We are in the interior design business and have access to all brands from different suppliers and distributors. We have always used a 5/8 inch product in the past for this application, but have found one by Harris in 1/2 inch red oak.....anybody know anything pro or con about this unfinished product? Price is over 1.50 less per sq. foot than what we have used in past. we realize wear layer is thinner but we will never refinish it!

First thing that comes to my mind (although it may be Harris product I'm unfamiliar with) is it could be some of that palettized shorter length stuff. By way of explanation, most US produced engineered hardwoods don't go any longer than 48 inches. 5/8" brings to mind better quality in longer lengths in the likes of Owens and....hmmn, now I forget the name.

probably a rotary peeled product. Most of the 5/8 with the 4/5 mm tops are sawn cut giving a much truer looking and stable floor. rotary accents the grain patterns makes them wide almost like plywood. I still like to see a minimum of 2mm surface for sanding. Make sure to prep the subfloor proper as well, easier to burn through the top of thin faces if the subfloor isnt within specs.
