I'm looking for some help in my decision. Here are the specs.
We are installing a floating floor (Bruce Turlington Lock and Fold) in a coop, we have about 850 sq ft. The apartment is on the 5th floor of the building, concrete slab with asbestos tile (which we don't really want to mess with). We are located in the New York city area.
Now the main concern is reducing the hollow feeling under the floor as much as possible (I know a thicker floor is better, but dosn't work with our budget), second is sound transmission to our downstairs neighbor and cost.
So what would be my best bet in this situation. The main products I'm looking at is 6mm cork which is pricey but I would do it if it's really worth it. Floor muffler which I'm not crazy about, it seems rather thin and I think would make the floor feel hollow. The one I'm really considering is Quietwalk, since my supplier carries it and I don't have to special order, it's economical and it has an integrated vapor barrier.
Has anyone had experience with all three? Like one over the other?

Thanks for the help.

I've used them all but I can't tell the difference. Does your co-op have any recommendations or specs?

no recommendations, just that we gotta put rugs/carpet on 80% of the living area. It's one of the rules no one cares about until someone complains. If you can't tell the difference I guess I'll go with the Quietwalk. TY

I forgot to say be ready for some squeaks with that Bruce floor. I don't know why but one I put in squeaked like a mother, ask Ken. Yes the floor was flat.

Read alot of other ppl voicing the same on the net about the Bruce floor. Do research.

The other 3G I did was from Mirage, no squeaky.

Was it really bad? The turlington was the only 5" floater that I could find in the < $4/sf price that I have to work with. What did your client say about the squeak?

I've done a few installs of the US Floors Carriage house. Impressive product, in the price range you mentioned.
Installed one over cork, and 3 over Quietwalk. IMO cant beat Quietwalk.

Thanks for the replies. I looked Carriage House up but I could only find it for $6/sq ft.

The other thing is over at Hoskings Hardwood I found Kahrs origional floating floors for the price I'm looking for. http://www.hoskinghardwood.com/Hardwood ... Basic.aspx

I'm a bit weary about buying online but they have a lot of great reviews. The floor I think is a good 1/8" thicker than the bruce. I think I'd go with the quietwalk underlayment instead of the Kahrs 2 in 1 which I think is plastic with foam beads.

Stick with the manufacturers underlayment if you can get it. But typically online places sell cheap generic stuff. The owner said he could not hear squeaks cus he used to be a fighter pilot and was partially deaf.

ProSource sells Carriage House in your range. But no gripes on Kahrs. Stephen is right, stick with the wood manufacturers underlayment, if they offer one.
