Hello everyone:

I am a first time poster. I normally hang out on several of the wood working forums. I like building furniture and turning bowls.

I am currently installing 3/4" x 3 1/4" Brazilian Cherry flooring in my livingroom and I am not sure about what to do with the fieldstone fireplace.

I tried undercutting the stone, but it is too hard. So now I am thinking I will picture frame it and caulk the gap between the stone and the flooring.

Someone suggested scribing each piece to but up against the rough stone, but I am not sure it would look that good and would be very time consuming anyway.

I welcome anyones thoughts.

Thank you.

Undercut with a dry diamond blade or scribe and caulk. :)

He's right... an abrasive type masonry will not work on rock/stone , a dry cut diamond blade will cut it.... albeit slow. The chiseling out is the most time consuming part for me.

This might get you going in the right direction http://www.custom-surfaces.com/23.html

Do you go to sawmillcreek?

Thanks for the replies.

I didn't try a diamond blade. The abrasive disk just didn't cut it (pun intended). Maybe I will try the diamond blade. If that is too slow going I will just caulk and move on.

Would you picture frame on strip around the fireplace, or just butt the ends?

I usually am on WoodNet. They are a great group of guys. I usually learn something every time I log on.

I'm undercutting one next week. I am going to picture frame this one... which do you prefer...one or two rows using 2 1/4 strip?

With 2ΒΌ I like 2 or 3 rows out. Looks better, then a header board around it, with strip flooring.
