Hi all,
We're currently looking at custom 5" hand scraped hickory engineered flooring. By "custom", I mean we specify the amount of scraping, the color of stain, and the level of gloss in the finish. The floors are then made and finished at the factory per our specifications.

They've produced a sample that we're pleased with, lightly scraped, 7 ply, but I just found out that the wear layer is only 1/16"! With scraping it seems that would bring those areas down to half that thickness.
I realize a hand scraped floor can't be sanded, and has to be refinished/recoated without sanding, but refinishing issues aside, a 1/16" wear layer seems unacceptably thin from what I've read.
I'd appreciate any input on this.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Bill

If you do not expect to be sanding this floor, it doesn't matter. As long as you are satisfied with the quality and hardness of the core, you should be fine. If the core is soft wood though, I'd be concerned.

Unless you want the extra thickness in case you'll sand it flat someday, don't pay for what you don't need.

There are custom manufacturer's that have thicker wear layers than 1/16". I know some but not sure if it is OK to list them on this site. If you want to PM me, I'll tell you of some.
