Hi,

I'm finishing my white oak floors. Is it OK if I do one coat of oil-based clear satin poly and then 2 coats of water based on top?

Is it true that water based poly is stronger than oil based? Does is last longer?

Thanks!
Dan

Use a sanding sealer between the oil and water. The very best finishes are waterbased finishes with a separate hardener, such a Bona traffic

Ok, RhodesHardwood, this is the third thread I have seen you recommend sanding sealer over existig finish. Is this correct? What type of sanding sealer are you using? It was always my opinion that sanding sealer was meant to be applied to raw wood to raise the grain prior to buffing and applying finish coat(s). Is that not so? Or are you using an old traditional term for some newer product that I am not aware of.

If you are using a waterbased finish over the oil you need to make sure the oil is fully cured so you do not trap the solvents before they cure which can cause clouding or compromise the hardness of the final coats. This
