Just thought some would like to see the difference between water-based and oil-based polyurethane. First pic is white oak, second might be a mixture of red and white. But the first one is with SealCoat and Vermeister Idro 2-K water-based poly.
The second pic is with 2 coats of Waterlox tung oil + 2 coats of Park's Pro Finish oil-based poly. They're both a "natural" floor (no stain) and I rolled the final coat on both floors.

Excellent illustration of the difference between a "white" finish of a water borne poly, and the "patina" character that an oil finish gives. May we use it? I will be happy to give you and HardwoodInstaller credit.

From what I have heard Charlie say about waterlox here, I think he would agree. It really does bring out the depth and richness in a wood floor..Nice work!!

Those are Charlies pics, but he wanted them shown here. I'm okay with it. If you have any spare time you're more than welcome to contribute articles for our site.

I just had my floors sanded and refinished with supposedly 3 coats of waterbase hydroline street shoe. This contracter seemed reputable...yet 2 weeks after finishing the floor seems very dull and not very smooth. A painter doing work in our home stated that it seems up to 2 coats were never applied. The floor should be shiny and smooth. The contracter is not returning any phone calls. Any suggestions on how the floor should look with a water based natural finish applied?

Thanks..

Let,s see; Basic Coatings makes both of those. Street Shoe is their premium floor finish and Hydroline is their sealer and sports floor coating.

http://www.basiccoatings.com/images/PDF ... Finish.pdf
Typically, when using Basic's finishing system, one needs to use one or two coats of a sealer ( Emulsion, Hydroline, or Commercial Catalyzed Sealer) and two coats of Street Shoe (if using Street Shoe). Street Shoe is now available in matte, satin, semi-gloss and gloss. If done correctly, you should have a smoothly finished floor that is well sealed and even in reflective properties, whether you have gloss or matte. If your contractor is not taking your calls, it's time to play hard ball. Get an independant inspection by an NWFA inspector or very experienced wood flooring contractor. Take that info to your attorney to write a strongly worded letter. If you have a licensing board in your state, contact them about filing a formal complaint. I am not saying your contractor did a bad job on your home. I haven't seen it. But not answering your calls is rude, unprofessional and unethical, IMO.

Nice pictures, thank you!
Can you put waterbased over Waterlox or an oil sealer/stain? How does the oil sealer/stain of Bona look under Tarffic? Sorry i forgot the name. I am getting on site floors done for me in October and he likes to do water based cause it is healthier he feels.

Gary--

Thanks for the info...I have an experienced flooring guy coming in the next week to analyze the job done previously. It's as if he didn't sand the floow using a fine grit paper. When you rub a rag over the top of the floow it sounds "prickly" and in some spots the rag will just "catch" on the wood.

BTW--Still no callback from the previous floor guy!!

Wiwbar:

yes, you can top coat Waterlox Sealer/Finish with water-based poly, in fact, poly will stick better to Waterlox than it will to raw wood. This also gives you the benefit of the warm patina that you will not get with water-based finishes. Make sure that the Sealer/Finish is fully cured, and apply your poly as usual, no sanding is required.
