I have been refinishing floors as a sideline business for about 5 years. I have been using a 19 inch buffer to screen with between coats and for finish sanding. I am interested in using a 15 inch General buffer to sand with. I want to use it mainly along edges and in congested hallways. My main concern is cross-grain damage. I would be stripping off old finishes on mainly oak floors and starting with 36 grit paper and working up to the finer grits and finishing off by screening. Any input about doing this is greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Your concern about cross grain mishaps is a reality. I wouldn't recommend it.

You can do it, but you can't skip any grits. A square buffer is a better option.
