Hello,

I am trying to remedy this pet stain. It started black like paint, couldn’t even see the wood grain. I have been able to lighten it a lot with hydrogen peroxide. Do you think I should continue trying or is this the best I’m going to be able to achieve. The whole floor is being sanded, stained and polyurethaned. We found this spot under carpet we pulled up in the living room.
Thanks for your time,

Elio

The stain looks like it is on Red Oak. Red Oak is more porous than white oak so sanding will not clean it up as much. You could try to bleach again after sanding, but you will still have a gray area. Since you are going to re-finish, the best solution would be to replace the flooring before the sanding. Another solution for you would be to cover the area with a small carpet. The stain probably doesn't smell, now.

Thanks for your response . You are correct that it is red oak. The spot is in an area that a rug won’t look good in. I am going to try and lighten it some more but I need to get moved in soon so replacing boards will have to wait for another day. Thanks again for your input.
