I am new at installing wood floors but managed to install about 200 sq ft of unfinished hardwood flooring from HD. I have not sanded it as yet and wanted to complete about 1000 sq ft more of the house. My problem now is that I have, it seems like, prefinished flooring (beveled edges) at the front door and dining room area (about 240 sq ft). It had minor scratches and has been sanded down. It seems to be the #1 or #2 grade because I can see some knots and other defects.

1. Do you recommend mixing beveled and non beveled together?
2. Install prefinish instead and forget about the work involved to put in unfinished.
3. Is it possible to match the two?

I am really confused and fustrated. My wife wants to me to just put down laminate and be done with it but I don't like it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

#1) It is done occasionally. Looks better when the two different styles are in separate rooms. If you try to weave the two together, it would not look good, IMO.

#2) Prefinished floors are easier for the DIYer and avoid the mess and time it takes to do finished in place floors.

#3) Define match. Sanding and staining unfinished wood to "match" a prefinished floor is difficult at best. They usually never "match". However, one can sand everything down to raw wood and stain and finish all the floors the same to "match".

Seems to me you are already committed to unfinished flooring since you've already installed 200 ft. However, you could tear it out and start over. Or, keep installing the unfinished and sand everything down and refinish it all to "match" as well as possible. Probably your best bet at this point in terms of appearance. As far as ease, it's the most complex and difficult.
