 Post subject: Uneven Stain and Blotchy Floors

I just had my 20 year old red oak floors sanded and stained by a contractor.

One coat of Minwax with 2 coats of Bona Traffic.

The contractor stained and put the Bona down next day

I am noticing blotchy and uneven stains.

Contractor said the wood did not take stain very well, and there’s not much that can be done other than giving it another try.

Wondering if I am being too picky, or if others feel that this is abnormal. Photos below:

Yes, it looks like the stain was not quite as dry as it should have been before the floor was coated with a water-based finish. It is a minor problem that you noticed. I would leave it. As the floor ages I think it will go away with time. I think that a full day for the stain to harden is best, even though directions say overnight drying will be OK .
