Hi everyone,

I will be putting down 3/4 inch maple hardwood that is 3 1/4 inch wide.
Now I had underlayment (5/16" spruce) everywhere I had Lino floor. So I decided to just add more of the underlayment to the rest of the areas where I want to install hardwood so the floor is all one height.
But I do have some small gaps inbetween some of the sheets of underlayment. Nothing more than about 1/2" wide tapering down to zero, gotta like these square houses now a days......
Can anyone suggest a good product I can use to fill in these gaps?
Would a PL400 work fine in these areas?
I have heard of people using thin set...does this work OK as I am going to be doing some tile work as well.

Also, is there a link anyone knows about in regards to the proper installation of stair nosing, risers and treads? I have been looking through out the posts but only find bits of info.

You need some space between the sheets of underlayment, an 1/8" is recommended. I don't thing a half inch would hurt you using a 3/4" solid wood. Don't use thinset when nailing a floor down. I would probably try ripping some underlayment and glue them in the larger gaps. Leave some gap though.

Thanks Jerry for the tips and suggestions.
I will be working on that this weekend hopefully finishing it and start laying out my hardwood.

Also, thanks so much Ken, that is exactly what I was looking for. It seems that link has pretty much everything covered.

I was wondering though, for the sides and top of the stringer.... What is the best way to do these?

I have seen where installers have taken a full sheet of wood (the same as the flooring) and stained it then cut it out in one piece for the sides of the stringer. Now I would imagine that they would have made a template out of some light cardboard or something to get all the angles just right from stair to stair.

I also seen where they used just the flooriing for the stringer sides as well as the top of the stringer then either stained the side of the top strip or used some molding to cover the corner created by the top strip and side piece covering the stringers.

What is the best way and preferred way to doing the stringers?
