I would like to keep the room skirtings on as i have recently decorated the room and dont want to waste the wallpaper. I also do not want to use a decorative moulding to hide the expansion gap so my new floor will need to go underneath the skirting.

What are the best tools / methods to remove the bottom inch of skirtings ?

Thanks !

IN ORDER OF PERSONAL PREFERENCE:

1: FEIN supercut
2: FEIN multi-master
3: converted angle grinder with 4-5 inch saw blade

#3 is very dangerous, and I have replaced all our crews saws with one of the FEIN saws. The multi-master is perfect unless you will be using it every day. For constant use, the heavier supercut is the best tool on the market.

There are several knock-offs of this tool now available at very reasonable cost. Including Dremel which should be a good, light duty tool.

What is the wood your skirting boards are made of? How many feet of it needs to be cut?

Crain Tools:820, or my Roberts Jamby, undercut saw, for faster cutting, but that Fein, is great for hard to reach stuff.

I have the Crain 820, 812 and the Fein multimaster... the Crain's are going to be considerably faster I think.
I bought the Multimaster before they came out with the SuperCut, thats the way my luck is on everything.

Ya Jerry, the multi-master is a fine (no pun intended) tool. But the Supercut is amazing. We hired a new service guy a few months ago, who had a multi-master. First day on the job, with one of our regular guys, he had a chance to use a Supercut; came in to see me next day and purchased one.

Based on your terminology and the site you posted, I'd guess you are from the UK. The tools that were recommended ( Crain ) are American tools that may not be readily available there. The link you posted shows a tool similar to what a Crain saw does. That would be ideal. The only area you will have difficulty is on inside corners. Some saws cannot get all the way back into the corner.

Yes i am in the uk, I couldnt find any of the crain tools her in the UK, so I am going to use the one in the link. I guess for inside corners a sharp chisel will do the job.

thanks for the help guys, at least i know im am going in the correct direction.
