Did the upstairs bedroom a couple weeks ago, now onto the living/dining room downstairs. Two questions.

1. I will be installing a header-board in the center of a couple doorways that will be perpendicular to the flooring in the room. I am going to rip off the tongue so it fit snugs against the flooring in the other rooms (carpet in one, soon to be tile in others), but I am wondering if I could still use the flooring stapler and staple the board down (even without a tongue?) or if I should face nail it.

2. Also, when installing spline to make the groove side a tongue side, should I install it and then blind nail it with a finish gun or can I use the hardwood staple gun? I had to use the reverse spline in a closet on the bedroom install and I used the staple gun to install it-and noticed when I hit it with the staple gun the spline moved and twisted a little bit and the row that then butted up to it did not fit all that great and showed a little bit of a gap no matter how much I tried to tighten it up.

Thanks for all the help. This forum has been invaulable!

Nick

for your turned board, glue it down with some good glue (subfloor glue, liquid nails ect. not just carpenters glue. Put some wieght on it, and blind nail it in the tounge. (you can even blind nail in the groove on the back side) If you can get the carpet to cooperate.
See how secure it is after the glue dries. Worst case put a few topnails in it and putty the holes.

Spline. Glue it in place with carpenters glue, then you can blind nail it with your nail gun, or staple it. (make sure it is in place before you staple/nail it, if it isnt flush it could gap the preceeding row.
