When a company touts "dustless" sanding, in your experience, is it truly dustless?

What brands are reputable? What does it take to get a newly room clean after a refinished floor? I want to cover the walls and ceiling with plastic to minimize the dust sticking, but any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Very few, if any, refinishing contractors are 100% dust free. Just not possible, IMO. They say they are dustless. It should be less dust. Less dust than before they got their vacuum system. I use one for some of my sanders and it helps a whole lot, to keep the amount of dust down. I'd say a good typical DCS (dust control system) reduces airborne dust by 90% over using just the dust collection bags that come with the sanders. But there is still a small amount of dust. IMO, it's not bad. I don't thinks walls need to be covered. Just remove expensive artwork, books, electronics and valuables. After the job is done, the flat surfaces are easily dusted off.

my experiences with the "dustless" systems.

I did a job for a large flooring company here, they supplied a bona dustless system. It was a trailer mounted system with a gas engine. It did a good job containing dust, but wasnt 100% dust free. However it did look really nice and was huge.

Next I bought my own bona DCS (portable unit) It worked the same as the trailer mounted system, But it was portable enough to take up to second story's etc. Great for the condos/high risies here. And again not 100% dust free.

Now I own the onedia portable system, its more portable than the bona system, and works just as well.

Between the three systems I have used, the end result is the same. about 95% of the dust is eliminated.

Typical sanding (machine and edger using bags, and normal buffer) create a lot of dust, Ive seen up to 1/8th of an inch of dust on countertops. and tons on the walls etc.

With a "dustless" system you can expect an accumulation equal to a few days without dusting. When I use the dustless sytems I dont hang plastic between rooms etc.

Thank you for your responses.

Clarke has that new PDC model that they consider their best DCS. Any opinions on it?

The room is for a nursery, so I have concern for the baby and my mother who has some lung issues. Dust containment systems and low VOC products consume my dreams these days...yikes.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread as I think this is semi-related. I was reading about the Dust Muzzle for angle grinders, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this product. I suspect I'm going to have some high spots from poor finishing that will need to be ground down, and I was considering using this combo to do it myself. Any thoughts?
