I finished my reclaimed oak floor with a Brazilian cherry border. During this project i'm scraping all the trim and baseboards and a few doors so most will be new. One room already has upgraded baseboard and trim.

What do you guys think does this match okay?

Should i buy new all trim?

Should i try and match all the new wood to this existing?

I do not think the color matches that well. And I am not fond of the base style. If the doors, jambs and casings are to be painted white or off white, then I think the baseboards look better painted to match the doors and casings. Having baseboards match the floor was a very 70's and 80's look. Nowdays, most homes have painted baseboards.

gary thanks for your comments, i agree the color does not match.

I like the white door, trim and baseboard option that new homes are putting in plus it's cheaper. The only issue i have is we have stained pine windows do those look okay painted?

My wife on the other hand likes the oak look. Is there a way to make the oak trim work?

You can definitely get a closer match if you go to a darker stain on the oak but remember...that cherry is going to darken over time, so matching it now won't help down the road.

I'm with Gary on this. Find a paint grade with custom milling. It always looks better painted in my opinion. Too much wood grain everywhere, takes away from the showcase floor.

AustinFloorguy thanks for the reply now i just need to convince the wife and find a solution for my wooden windows or should i use painted baseboard with oak trim around the windows? Or do all white/painted everything?

We walked through some new house's in our area most had all white trim baseboard and vinyl white windows. these were 300-400k range our home is 50 years old and probably 225 k range.

How many lft are you talking about here? I prefer painted colonial style beaded base but you can get BC base.

While you are undergoing this renovation, you should try to minimize the different trims. Try to maintain some consistency in profile between the baseboard, door casings, and window trim. And, the painted trim will have a much more neutral look, enhancing the floors, and you wont have to worry about colour and grain differences.

for the base board 150 lft i have not measured the door casing and window yet.

my wife was thinking of trying to match the oak rather than the BC

looking at some higher end home restorations last night some of them did white trim and baseboard but the doors and door trim was stained wood such as maple or cherry

i agree staying consistent thought the project is a good idea i may do a room i was not planning just so the whole first floor is the same.
