I have searched but can't find the answer.

When installing a treads and risers, does the back of the tread butt-up against the riser OR does the tread go under the riser and the riser sits on top of the tread?

Thanks! :D

Start at the bottom and work your way up.

The very bottom step... riser/ tread, the next riser goes on and hides any gap, of the back of the tread.

I prefer setting the treads then the riser to cover any gap behind the tread, as Austin said.

I think it's an either, or. My preference is also staring at the bottom but I put a riser in first then the tread using cut nails or wood shims to tighten the riser up against the back of the tread.

Thanks Folks!

I think I'll lay the tread first, then place the riser above it. This way I should be able to hide some nail holes that I make at the back of the tread.

Would it be wise to use a construction adhesive in addition to nailing the treads? I want to eliminate any possible noises if I can. I will be using 1 inch solid (one-piece) treads.

Yes, use glue as well. PL Premium Urethane adhesive works well.

It won't take you too long to figure out the best method. It all comes down to how your steps are constructed.... and if the stringers are level and the skirt boards are plumb to net fit, or whether the risers are "let in" to the skirts.

Like Mr. Gary, I also use the PL polyurethane adhesive.
