im trying to figure out how to transaction into my kitchen which has 1/2 inch of underlayment and linoleum. The transaction will be in a drywalled opening into the kitchen about 4 feet wide. my solution was to rip the last 3 1/4 board down to about 2 inches, and rip down a matching quarter round to but up against the last ripped board. By doing this the quarter round is shaved down to about 3/16 of an inch. I see 2 problems with thats, one is nailing the quarter round being the slither thats left, and also ive never shaved quarter round down like this before dont know if its possible.

any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I would try a 5/16 x 1 1/2 mini reducer. Cut the vinyl back to pick up 1/16" and you may also have to build the wood up slightly with 30lb felt or layered 15lb felt. The reducer would sit on top of the 1/2 vinyl underlayment.... fat part to the wood.

Pbotz, the fabrication you are describing is readily available pre-milled out of one piece. Commonly referred to as a carpet reducer or lip reducer. Grooved on the 3/4 inch side to accept spline or end tongues, depending on direction of the floor, gently slopes down and has a overhang milled on the edge, about a 1/2 inch by 1/4 inch rabbet.
