Many of you already might have read about this in the Hardwood magazine e-mail news yesterday. I recieved this in an email from a friend as well. Little more info than you can get elsewhere. The body of the email is in the next post. The list of Chinese manufacturers in this petition is to long to post, about 7 pages long.

Subject: Multilayered Wood Flooring from China -- Antidumping & Countervailing Duty Petition

Gala Manufacturing just recieved word about this filing for a 242% import duty and wanted to share this with folks that may benefit from knowing about this information:

An assualt by certain US companies against Chinese engineered wood flooring and the US distributors/importers of that flooring has begun.

Although our group specifically is not named at this time some of our customers are in fact named and we will be vigilant in protecting them and their customers.

We will follow this closely to see what, if any, impact we can have to fight this beurocratic nonsense.

(note: armstrong is both a petitioner and a named offender - which is interesting because so many more of the companies petioning also import from china. This is just a move to bring production costs up in china to make the US seem more competitive while hitting the consumer with much higher prices.)

A similiar move in bedroom furniture resulted in a 400% duty on wooden bedroom sets from China, which only moved production to India, Taiwan and Vietnam. The same result would happen in flooring if this succeeds. Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries would simply pick up the production until the duty expires. The disruption caused, however, is not helpful in a weak market and I would encourage any of your to analyize your position on this duty and stay informed accordingly.

Anyway I just wanted to share this so that you all had access to this information in case you didn't already have this information.

Thanks,

sjs
