I plan to glue down engineered wood (Brazilian cherry) on slab, and not sure what kind of adhesive to use. I read a lot about Bostik and Mapei in this forum. However, when I went to lowes or Home depot, they don't have Mapei. They do have Bostik Best though. Lowes has Titebond, and home depot has Robert 1407.

The sales person told me that Robert 1407 is designed for engineered floor and much easier to use than Bostik, which is designed for general purpose. Robert 1407 (~$70 for 280 sq ft) is much cheaper than Bostik or Mapei 9900. However, I've never heard of Robert 1407 or Titebond. Are they good for engineered wood? Thank you.

Acrylic adhesives are fine for engineered wood. Read the instructions, as most have an open time from the minute it is spread to the time you place that first board into the fresh combed adhesive.

Acrylics clean up with water, moisture cure cleans up with mineral spirits and can be a real mess if your not very very careful.

Be aware, too, that the Roberts 1407 requires the floor to be rolled.

Thank you so much for your reply!

Since I would hire contractor to do the job, I assume it would be much safer to use Bostik?

Also, the contractor told me they use Mapei 980. Is that good? (I can not find Mapei 980, only 990 with the same price as Bostik Best and available at lumber liquidator. )

Thank you!

Assuming your wood is engineered, what about moisture testing? Me, I'd never glue down wood on concrete with an acrylic. Let alone roberts 1407.

Bravo :D I feel the same way about an acrylic over concrete.

I just used Roberts 1407 Acrylic, on a Mullican engineered I did a couple of weeks ago. I didn't buy it or supply it, but that is what they had. It was no different then Taylor 2071, or Mohawks Acrylic. They need to change their trowel notching recommendations, though.

I would argue that statement. 1407 says no solid and I have witnessed it fail on a 3/8 solid floor. On the other hand the 2071 allows you to use it on solid.

My personal feelings are if the adhesive says it can do solids then its good enuff fer me. Otherwise no.

Floorguy said he used the 1407 on an engineered.

I realize that, just saying I won't adhesives unless they can be used for solids as well as engineered. If yer going to install it why cheap out?

Personally, I believe that using a product specifically designed for an application is not necessarily "cheaping out" even if it is less expensive that using another product which is designed for a broader range of uses.

I used the Roberts once that was supplied by the customer and it failed. I will never use their product again. The only glue I will use is Bostik's Best. It may be messy and more expensive but have never had an issue with it.

How did the adhesive actually "fail"

Did it fail to make it out of the bucket, and onto the floor?

Never seen a glue failure, even though I have been asked 100s of times now, to investigate a glue failure claim, buy the retailer.
