Hi,

I just installed new unfinished flooring and had it finished as well as an adjoining entry way refinished to match. Unfortunately, there are tiny bumps everywhere. Some places the bumps are worse than others, but they are visible on all areas of the floor.

Here is a link to some pics of varying quality.

Any idea what this could be? I am a hobbyist woodworker, so I have a general understanding of sanding and finishing. This just looks like the floor was a mess when they applied the stain. In fact, they got it all over the base boards, which I thought they would take off. They got it on the carpet in places, and on the banister/newel post.

The contractor is coming over tomorrow to take a look.

Thanks!
Chris

Trash in the finish. It will buff out but its going to need another coat.

Looks like the stain wasn't completely dry and bled back into the finish. You can tell because the pimples are dark. Not professional and buffing and re coating might not be a permanent solution. If hte stain never dried properly, you can be looking at a delamination problem in the near future.

i think im with Paul on this one..it also looks like a waterbase finish..that would be the result of finishing to quickly over the stain..
gotta love this biz..so many things to to know and so many things to learn sometimes..

The contract came by today and said the same thing. He says he can buff it out and put another coat of poly on this. Will that take care of the problem?

My wife things I should be asking for money back due to the inconvenience of having them come in again (I have 2 small kids, so having them come back will be a pain.

I tend to think that as long as he fixes the problem ASAP, we are square. Mistakes happen, and he is already loosing money by having to send more guys over.

What is your approach to stuff like this?

I agree with you and like your attitude. Mistakes do happen even to the best of us. As long as he fixes it in a timely fashion he shouln't be penalized. It would be a different story if he fought you on it or waits till the fix is convenient for him.

My approach in this case might be to re sand and start over . I believe your problem is that the stain wasn't dry and bled back into the finish .If you buff and re coat, you will have smoother black dots in your finish . Ideally, you don't want black pimples all over your floor and the only way to remove them is to re sand.

What type of finish was used on your floor ? James mentioned water base characteristics and that can definitely be a contributing factor as some water based finishes don't like to be put over wet stain.

I think buffing the floor and recoating will fix this floor. I know what paul is saying about the bumps/pimples in the floor, but I believe that this doesn't look that bad and buffing will solve this issue.
