Hello, we are thinking of having an addition put on our 60’s ranch home. We currently have hardwood floors and would like to have the addition tie-into the existing floors. Is this possible?

We would be using the addition to enlarge three existing bedrooms. So the bedrooms would have half old floor and half new floor. To make things even more complicated we plan to move interior walls and doorways. We’re guessing that we would need to have the floors refinished in order to have any hopes of them matching. But I don’t know if it is even possible to use any of the existing bedroom flooring.

Thank you for your help. Please let me know if you need more information.

Completely reasonable to use as much of the existing flooring as possible. You would need to plan to completely resand and finish the flooring after addition, laced in repairs and new flooring is added. Just create you new addition to the same subfloor level.

That is the trick, isn't it. I cannot count how many additions were uneven with the existing subfloor where the builder told me to "deal with it". Sometimes, "dealing with it" was costly to the builder and customer. I guess some builders think we floorman can make miracles.

Wow thanks for the quick reply.

That makes me feel much better. Thanks for the warning about the subfloor, I can imagine that that can turn into a big nightmare, even if you are planning to sand down the floors for refinishing.

Thanks again. :D
