I've seen a few posts like your come through here.
I think the hardest thing might be ripping the strips perfectly straight. Then you'd most likely have to glue them down, full spread to keep them flat. Then the splintered edges. Manufactures bevel the edges for multiple reasons. Guess you could hand sand them. Water base.
