Location: Third rock from the sun

Installing 3/4" TG maple on 5/8" plywood floor. Is the #15 tar felt necessary or can I use the standard grey felt? Does the tar felt give the floor a different (nicer) feel? This is above grade, 35 year old bungalow, in Southern Ontario climate.
