Carpet is gross...you think you have it clean, but you never do. It just gets worse as time goes on, and there's nothing you can do about it. It's just a huge sponge of nasty.

I don't believe hardwood is tougher to take care of, in fact a lot easier. It's a matter of identifying your issues.

Anyway...Probably one of the most common errors in cleaning hardwood floors,( other than using the wrong products) , is not constantly rinsing the dirt out of the mop, as your cleaning. Most folks create a slury of gunk, and spread it around the floor. It will come off on your socks everytime. I don't think swiffers work great for this........I recommend my customers use a flat terry cloth mop, run under water, ring out real good, and sprayed with Bona Cleaner. And consistantly running the terry cloth under water, ring it out real good and repeat....

Socks are black the next day ? That sounds very strange to me. My sister has a wood burning stove that doesn't generate enough soot to make my socks black by the next day. I think maybe buying and wearing black socks would solve the problem completely.

On a serious note, if you had carpet , would it not be absorbing all the black stuff that you say is in your house ? I can't think of anything in a house that would make your floors that dirty besides a steel smelting pot .

I have a waxed hardwood floors and my socks stay clean. Big mistake using a Dyson or any other carpet vacuum on a hardwood floor that has a beater bar on it.
