Ok, we've finished our downstairs with the Shaw engineered hickory - LOVE it! and will post pics soon :) - and now we'll be tackling the staircase. We will be removing the huge 'for carpet' treads and replacing with plywood. We have stair noses from the company and will use planks for the risers and treads.

Shaw says to do the stairs top down, but we would like to go from bottom up. Does it make a big difference? And do you prefer treads into risers or risers over treads?

Thanks for all the help we're finding on this forum!

We usually go from the bottom to the top and usually we go risers on top of treads. I have done it both ways with great results. We also glue and nail the flooring in place.

Thanks Mickey! Those were the directions we were leaning and your experience makes me more confident it is best way to go.

You must like extra work, and opening a potential can of worms :P Dont know why you insist on removing the existing treds, instead of cutting off the overhang :?

We know what is under them, Howard, we lived next door while we had the house built and there is a very firm stringer. And since we live in the house the dust cutting those stair noses off would be more than we can handle. Popping them off and replacing with plywood will be a lot easier, we hope! LOL

If you dont have the proper equipment to cut um off, ya it would be a dust bowl. Hopefully the drywall, or whatevers at the ends, isn't locking in the treds.

Thankfully, they did the walls before putting down the treads :)

They look great! Thanks for the pictures. Is that a Poney Express bag at the bottom of the staircase? 8-)
