I have recently refinished about 1000 square feet of red oak. We stained it English Chestnut, then coated with oil based poly. We screened with a 220 screen between coats. We noticed after it was dry swirl marks from the buffing between coats. I have never had this happen before from using a 220 screen. What can I do to fix this short of refinishing the floor again? I was thinking of maybe buffing the crap out of the floor with a square buffer. But I am not sure what to do. Thanks

Makes sense to me,BUT. I've said a zillion times,"I'm not a s&f guy". What if you did , buff the heck out of it with the square buffer just past the top coat, just enough to take out the swirls. Obviously not getting into the stain, (I'm sure very touchy,not to getting into the stain). Then hit it with a red pad for another top coat??? Why wouldnt that work? Yea, better wait to hear from an s&f guy

What sheen of finish? if its not satin try putting satin down. You might be able to buff it out with a square buff but you will trade swirls for pigtails. You think there in the first coat or the second? As a rule of thumb I always advise to wait an extra day of dry time before a final if the finish is still a little tender you can introduce some swirls. Ive been switching a bunch of guys lately to the norton sandollars for inter-coat abrasion to help with swirls.

Kevin, thanks for the reply. It was sating finish. I went out to the house today and buffed the floor about 3 different times with a square buff. I did see the pigtails after the first time, but went over it a couple more times with a dulled up 220 screen and luckily it worked. I am so glad that I don't have to sand it again. I think I will start using the sand dollars. What grit do you use? Do you use the same grit for oil & water? Thanks again
