I have two kids and always have a bunch more running through the house (in SOCKS :)))All of us take shoes off before coming in, even adults :) I am wondering if the high gloss finish on my floor just makes these scratches show up more. Is it typical to frequently get surface scratches with kids and pets and my expectations that the floor would hold up better are just too high? Or is it the high gloss finish? Maybe when I re-coat I should get the satin??? Am I unrealistic in thinking I can prevent continuing surface scratches because it's just part of having hardwoods?? Any thoughts?

You got it right. The shinier the finish the more the scratches will show. That is why more and more people and prefinished manufacturers are going with satin and semi-gloss.

I agree with Jeff.
the higher the gloss the more reflective the imperfections.

I've always wondered why people want natural products while wanting them to shine like plastic.

This is why I think the hard wax oil finishes like Rubio will become more popular, easy to fix scratches. Just got a sample of the new Corboo with the oil finish already applied, USFloors.

Also agree, the shinier the finish the more that will show. If you do decide to recoat with a satin finish, be sure to check manufacturers recommendations for recoating.
