Just purchased home in Hawaii. Home built in 1994. In the kitchen area the contractor laid 3/8 inch ply on top of the 5/8" subfloor so that the transition from thick LR carpet to linoleum in the kitchen was less noticeable.
I was going to tear out the 3/8 ply but stopped when I noticed about 40 ring shank nails (1 1/4) per sheet that is glued to the subfloor. Additionally the large island and all the cabinetry are sitting on top of the now 1" ply. I tried a small section and stopped because of damage to the top layer of the 5/8 and the potential damage if I attempted to cut the 3/8th close to the toe kicks on the beautiful cabinetry for removal.
Any suggestions on how to raise LR floor 3/8ths? Our lumber yard only has 3 ply 3/8th CDX. I screwed and glued a few pieces down but now have reservations that as it completely dries there may be uneveness in the surface.
What if I was to put down 5/16th Hardie board with a layer of 30lb felt paper to get close to 3/8? Your thoughts on that.
Over here most installers would use kiln dried plywood. The 5/8th is pricey but I do not know if a 3/8th kiln dried is even available.
I plan on installing a pre finished (TnG) solid Acacia wood that is 11/16ths thick.
thank you
joe
