To save a few dollars on installation I'm doing the subfloor prep. Prior floor was carpet abutting original hardwoods. Luckily, the 5/8" particle board is not glued to the plywood underneath so it's just a matter of taking up the gazillion nails to to remove it. My question is---how do I figure out how thick the plywood underneath the particle board is? how thick does it need to be so that I don't have to add another layer before the 3/4" hardwood is installed? I assume I can go ahead and take up the particle board and walk around on the plywood without landing in the garage below.....right?
thanks

In my area all the older homes use a 1/2" CDX subfloor under the 5/8" PB. Check at a HVAC floor vent by folding back the metal boot flap or just drill a hole somewhere. Whatever your subflooring is make sure to re-nail or screw it down good, most are only half-arsed nailed down with 8d cement coated nails.

I am removing the subfloor prior to the install to save a few bucks. The particle board under the carpeting looks rather straightforward. Any tips on the 250 sq ft of plywood in the kitchen with vinyl over it. Remove the vinyl first? it is glued to the plywood. thanks again, Bruce

thanks for the replies. I have forced hot water baseboard heaters with the pipes running thru the walls from the adjacent rooms. I'll drill a hole in one of the closets and slip a tape measure through. If they put the subfloor down with as many nails as the PB (one every six inches or so) that should be OK but I'll definitely check it out.
