Hello,
After tearing out several layers of preivious flooring (laminate, 3 layers of linoleum and 5/8" particle board) I got down to what turned out to be 1/2" plywood. We will be installing 3/4" x 4 1/4" plank hardwood flooring which requires a minimum of 5/8" plywood. Besides having some soft spots here and there, the floor has a few low spots. So my questions are as follows: 1) Can I screw and glue another layer of 1/2" plywood to make it a 1" subfloor and accomplish the minimum subfloor base and strengthen the existing 1/2" subfloor with some bracing from below. I know it is best to just replace it with 3/4" but I'm on a limited budget and also am doing this project with a 2 year old running around and pregnant wife who can't wait for it to be done. 2) How do I level the low spots? I read in an earlier post not to use a cement based self leveling floor leveler, is there another type of self leveling agent (vinyl)? I saw in a previous post to use roofing shingles to level the subfloor, do these face up/down and how do you stack them without leaving gaps?
Thank you,
Scott
