Greetings folks. I plan on installing a 1/2" nail down engineered quartersawn oak floor to replace a carpeted floor for my wife parents who are elderly. The carpet is gone. This carpeted area has a 1/4" fibre rock underlayment (apparently ok for under wood floors according to manufacturer) atop a 3/4"subfloor over 12"oc joists. This surface is very flat. The new wood floor will meet up to an existing travertine floor for about 25 ft, which was not laid flat (unfortunately) so in some areas adding the 1/2" flooring exactly matches the height of the travertine, while in other areas the travertine is higher so the wood flooring would be below the surface of the travertine by 3/16 in some spots. I was hoping to avoid using any transition strips between the wood and stone, and end up with matching flat surfaces so that there is no bump in the floor. If I build up the areas around where the travertine is higher... I am essentially taking a nice flat floor surface for the wood and making it so that it is not a flat surface to install the wood floor, which doesn't sound like a great idea. Any thoughts?
