This is a great place and I would like to thank all for the spirit of giving advice. I have been reading for quite a few days and now have a question. I have read many posts on subfloors and the sticky.

The Stickied post says that 3/4 osb is the 4th best, but still acceptable, subfloor to nail 3/4" solid hardwood to. My wife and I are building a new house this spring and are currently getting bids. They are all coming back with " 3/4" Premium Gold OSB subfloor glued and screwed". The floor joists will be an engineered floor system (silent floors) on 16" spacings. Will this be fine to use for the hardwood flooring? Or since we are building, is there another route that would be better without being cost prohibitive?

There will be about 1100 square feet of hardwood, probably white and red oak. My game plan was to put the felt paper right over the Premium Gold OSB and nail down with the flooring going opposite the floor joists.

Thanks for the advice as we could still do something different if necessary.

Keith

You should be fine. What part of the country do you plan on building that house in? Will you have a full basement or a crawl space? Who is the manufacturer of that "premium gold osb" subflooring?
It's true that OSB is accepted by The NWFA/NOFMA. However, IMO, the best subfloor for hardwood being nailed down is G-P "Plytanium Sturd-I-Floor". http://www.gp.com/build/product.aspx?pid=1396
The ONLY reason any builder specifies OSB is to save on cost.

Thanks Gary. We are in central MO. It is a ranch house with a full finished basement. I am not sure who the manufacturer is but can find out.

I will check out the subfloor you mentioned and chat with the builders about it.
