HELP!

I just had my Brazilian cherry wood floors refinished and stained dark. They look absolutely beautiful. Or they used to! I had a terrible experience with a painter, who taped rosin paper directly to the wood floors. When he went to remove the paper, he discovered that--oops!--he must have accidentally purchased high-adhesive tape at the hardware store. I don't think it was any special kind of tape. It looked like an ordinary roll of masking tape to me. But alas, now I am left with long strips of stubborn adhesive residue on my wood floors. See the photo below. The strips look shiny from a distance.

I have tried all the conventional solutions without success. This includes: mineral spirits, Goo Gone, hair dryer to loosen the adhesive, nail polish remover, baby oil, boiling water, a paint scraper...NOTHING has even touched the adhesive.

I am desperate for a suggestion. How about a commercial carpet adhesive remover like this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Sentinel-Formula-747-Plus-128-oz-Adhesive-Remover-SPI747-1/202523866?

I fear it is hopeless, as the adhesive seems to have cured to the floor. But I hope I've come to the right place and you can prove me wrong. PLEASE help!

Thank you in advance!

Very common with painters who are clueless about floor finishes. He should have used this;

Its probably like $5 more a roll than regular tape. Big expense huh?

You could try a Mister Clean Magic eraser.

Thanks for the suggestion! I just tried a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, but unfortunately that did not work. Any other ideas?

Happy 4th!

its best to never tape a floor at all with any type of tape..hes lucky it didnt peel the finish.

you can try the product you want as there will only be process of elimination.

You can try adhesive remover by Bostik but before going that route I would try goof off.

Can you feel the residue? is it actually peeled?

this may possibly be a curing issue..when were the floors finished before it wads taped?

I did try the goof off, and that did not work unfortunately.

Interesting you mention curing. The floors had just been refinished, and they were allowed to cure for 7 days before the painter started. So it was pretty quick.

The adhesive is very difficult to feel. The edges of the tape are ever so slightly raised, and the floor is very very lightly tacky where the tape was, but it's extremely subtle.

I will give the Bostik remover a try.

He could have easily removed the top coat by puling that tape. Are you sure that its didnt pull the finish off? It would explain why you cant remove it? Id call the floor finisher out to see what he says and have him give you a quote on repairing the floor then send that to the painter who should of known better. MAy have to screen and recoat to fix.
