Hello,

First up: I'm very glad to have found this forum, as I have a very specific question!

I've been trying to find a way to floor a 3 season sunroom (10'X14'), whose floor is a simple raised slab of concrete. Now a friend of mine just bought some land I'm going to have easy (free!) access to freshly cut logs as he's clearing a space for a house. Then this strange idea hit me: what if I cut 1 inch disks out of those logs (10-14 inches wide) and cover the floor with them? (I'd fill in the in-between spaces with wood, probably stained darker.)

But then I thought about winter, and was wondering how such a floor would hold up...

Any ideas? Recommendations?

Thanks a lot!

Loa

You mean like this cept round? http://www.mesquitewoodproducts.com/images/3.jpg

You may be able to glue it down and bury it in an exterior grade epoxy, if there is such a thing.

Wood needs to be sealed outside like as in deck sealer. Better idea might be to build up a raised deck ( 4inches above concrete) with plywood then glue to that and seal.

Hello,

The floor will be raised above the concrete (was thinking ~2 inches: 2X2 structure + 3/4 plywood), but I'm not too keen on the epoxy. I'm a natural finish nut, but in this situation, I may have to go with synthetics.

Also, what can I use to fill in the gaps between the wood, before applying finish?

Thanks

Loa

As to the fresh cut wood, it would have to be cut and dried for a year or so. Cross cut like that, they would probably crack and check, or warp, as it shrinks.

Good point rschissler. You might want to dry down the log first then make the cuts.

Hello,

I'll certainly find a way to get the wood dry before laying it out, but my question remains: what do I use to fill the gaps between the discs?

Thanks

Whats ever you use it's going to cost a fortune because of the amount needed. Regular wood filler is going to crack up and not hold due to the huge voids. You might have to go to an epoxy wood filler. Bondo makes some.

I'd keep all the sawdust, and mix a filler with sawdust and lacquer sanding sealer.
